The notoriously stressful career of cooking for a living means that this vacancy with Swell Lodge is a dream job for a chef – and it's on a tropical island!
Although food is usually a chef's passion, many of them also describe their job as pretty stressful – a busy kitchen is an intense place to work and involves continual, short-term deadlines. None of that will be the case for the successful applicant of this dream job vacancy.
Swell Lodge is a laid-back, all-inclusive, luxury resort with just TWO glass-fronted eco chalets. For the guests, this means a private, paradise-like getaway, surrounded by nature in the middle of the Indian Ocean (Christmas Island to be exact). For the chef, or any other staff there, it means a very small number of people to look after, typically 4 in total – which translates in this case to an estimated 6 hours work per day for the chef and we don't think those 6 hours will feel too stressful.
The job description, as posted on Swell Lodge's Facebook page, explains that you'll need to prepare gourmet lunchboxes in the mornings and then head out to the oceanfront eco-chalets in the evenings to prepare a 3-course dinner to the guests. The job listing states 'Much of the middle of each day is spare for the chef to go snorkelling in the crystal-clear, 28 degree tropical water….' or 'explore the rainforest, go caving' or lots of other lovely sounding activities including chilling out on the island's secluded beaches.
Their current Michelin-starred chef is leaving in Mid-February so they want to recruit someone soon and, although they require meticulous presentation and attention to detail, applicants don't need to have a Michelin star themselves.
The package on offer for this 12-month, full-time contact is: AUD $86,000 per annum, including accommodation, car, fuel, flight from Perth, 6 weeks annual leave, internet and other perks.
